Trio Picked In MLS SuperDraft First Round
January 14, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Holness, the Jamaican International, was taken fifth overall by Real Salt Lake, followed by McCrary who went to the New England Revolution with the 10th selection. That marked the first time in program history that UNC had two players in the top 10 in a single SuperDraft.
Campbell made it three Tar Heels in the first dozen picks when Chicago Fire grabbed the first team All-America with the 12th overall selection.
Holness becomes the highest selected Tar Heel since 2010 when Zach Loyd was taken No. 5 by FC Dallas. He is also the fourth UNC player drafted by Real Salt Lake, joining Jamie Watson (2005), Enzo Martinez (2012, 1st) and former teammate Boyd Okwuonu in the second round of 2014.
McCrary is the second Tar Heel taken by New England Revolution. Stephen McCarthy was drafted in the 2011 second round.
Campbell is the third Carolina player drafted by Chicago Fire. Logan Pause, who spent his entire MLS career in Chicago, was a 2003 third rounder, while Jalil Anibaba was a 2011 first rounder.
Since 2000, Carolina has produced 44 MLS draft picks or homegrown selections.
