Tar Heels Take Fifth At Southern Scuffle
January 3, 2016 | Wrestling
CHATTANOOGA --- Led by runner-up finishes from Evan Henderson and Ethan Ramos, North Carolina finished fifth in the team competition at the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena. Joey Ward, John Michael Staudenmayer and Alex Utley joined Henderson and Ramos on the podium to lead the Tar Heels to their best Scuffle finish since placing fifth at the 2008 event.
Henderson opened the quarterfinals with a bang, pinning Matthew Frisch of the The Citadel in 4:19 to earn a spot in the final four. The New Florence, Pennsylvania, product then bested Duke's Mitch Finesilver 5-2 before falling in the final to Penn State's Zain Retherford, the top seed and the nation's No. 1 wrester at 149 pounds.
Ramos' run to the 174 final started with an injury default win over Navy's Jadaen Bernstein. The redshirt sophomore then turned in perhaps the best win of his career by topping No. 2 Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State 6-5. Ramos faced Most Outstanding Wrestler Bo Nickal of Penn State in the final, dropping an action-packed 11-7 decision.
At 141, Ward fell in the quarters to Stanford's Joey McKenna before rattling off four straight wins to surge to a third-place finish. He just missed a tech fall in a 16-2 win over Tony DeAngelo of West Virginia before knocking off No. 11 Tommy Thorn of Minnesota in the consolation semis. Ward sealed third place with a 6-2 decision over Jared Prince of the Naval Academy Prep School.
Staudenmayer gave the Tar Heels a pair of third-place finishers with his fine work at 165. After another impressive win over Connor Flynn of West Virginia, Staudenmayer was pinned by eventual champion and No. 1 wrestler Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State. The Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, redshirt senior then scored back-to-back overtime wins to grab third. He bested Penn State's Geno Morelli 2-1 in the consolation semis before a 3-1 sudden victory win over Ryan Preisch of Lehigh.
After a narrow setback in the quarterfinals, Utley won a pair of bouts to take seventh at 184 pounds. The redshirt senior topped Stanford's Garet Krohn 9-3 in the seventh-place match. He also beat West Virginia's Jakob Scheffel 7-4 in an earlier round.
Led by five individual champions, No. 1 Penn State won the team title for the sixth consecutive year. Oklahoma State, Lehigh, Cornell and UNC rounded out the top five in the team competition. Henderson and Ramos led the way for the Tar Heels, with Henderson scoring 22.5 team points and Ramos contributing 21.
Carolina will return to the mat next Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Pitt Duals. The Tar Heels will face Edinboro, Columbia and Brown in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
