Tar Heels Rank No. 2 In Baseball America Recruiting Poll
October 12, 2016 | Baseball
North Carolina was ranked No. 2 nationally in Baseball America's annual recruiting class rankings, the publication announced Wednesday. Led by six members of the BA500, the No. 2 ranking is the highest for the Tar Heels since placing No. 1 overall in 2003.
Only No. 1 pick Ole Miss had more top-500 prospects than Carolina, which saw all six of its ranked freshmen place among the top 208 nationally.
RHP Tyler Baum leads the way as the No. 91 overall prospect. He is joined in the top 200 by fellow right-handed pitchers Austin Bergner (165), Luca Dalatri (174), Robbie Peto (179) and Bo Weiss (183). Catcher Brandon Martorano, who teamed with Dalatri at Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey as a prep, rounds out the Tar Heels at No. 208.
Five of the six Carolina freshmen in the rankings were drafted in the 2016 MLB Draft - Weiss (Yankees, 29th round), Peto (Angels, 30th round), Martorano (Diamondbacks, 30th round), Bergner (Red Sox, 38th round) and Dalatri (Rockies, 40th round).
UNC concludes its fall season this weekend with the team's annual Fall World Series. Action begins Friday at 6 p.m. and continues Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1:30. Admission to Boshamer Stadium is free to all spectators.
