NOTRE DAME, IND. – The 20th-ranked Notre Dame women's soccer team downed the 11th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels Friday night 1-0 at Alumni Stadium, handing UNC its first ever loss against the Fighting Irish in South Bend in six games. A crowd of 2,216 was on hand to see the Fighting Irish win.

The only goal of the game came at the 56:20 mark when Notre Dame's Jennifer Westendorf scored on a free kick from 19 yards out, sending a strike into the upper right 90 corner of the goal.

Carolina had dominated much of the possession in the first half of the game and had outshot the Fighting Irish 8-6 in the opening 45 minutes while also having an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. But the Tar Heels were unable to capitalize on any of their chances and headed into the break even with the Fighting Irish.

UNC had a good run of the play in the opening minutes of the second half before the Fighting Irish were able to force a turnover in the midfield that led to a free kick being awarded 19 yards from the goal. After Westendorf's goal in the 57th minute, the momentum swung in Notre Dame's direction for much of the rest of regulation time. UNC got off six shots in the second 45 minutes but only one on goal. Meanwhile, Notre Dame had 12 second half shots and Lindsey Harris was forced to make six saves in the process, keeping the Tar Heels in the game until the closing moments.

Notre Dame ended up outshooting the Tar Heels 18-14 although UNC had an edge in corner kicks 9-4. Lindsey Harris had eight saves in the match, the third highest total of her career. Kaela Little finished with five saves for Notre Dame.

With the win, Notre Dame improved to 10-2-3 on the season and 5-1-1 in the ACC. North Carolina fell to 8-3-3 on the season and 3-2-3 in the ACC.

UNC is now 16-7-2 all-time against the Fighting Irish, including a 4-1-1 mark against them in South Bend.

The Tar Heels will be back in action on Thursday when it plays at Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. That will be the first game in a two-game road swing for the Tar Heels who will also play at Syracuse on Sunday, October 23 at 1 p.m.
