Three Tar Heels Advance To Round Of 16 In Cary

Members of the UNC men's tennis team continue action Sunday in Cary as part of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regionals, played at Cary Tennis Park. Three Tar Heels – senior Ronnie Schneider, junior Robert Kelly and sophomore Blaine Boyden – reached the singles round of 16 with wins on Saturday.
Schneider, seeded second overall, beat Duke's Nick Stachowiak 6-4, 7-6(4) Saturday and faces off Sunday against NC State's Alexis Galameau, who is seeded 16th.
Kelly, the No. 7 seed, beat Campbell's Lukas Schafer 6-2, 6-2 Saturday and will face Furman's Adamy Steryous, the No. 15 seed, in the round of 16.
On Saturday, Boyden fought to a three-set victory over Gardner Webb's Maximilian Scholl, 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-5. He'll face Duke's Catalin Mateas, the No. 10 seed, on Sunday.
Three UNC doubles teams will compete in third-round matches beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday. Schneider and senior Jack Murray are the No. 3 seed in the draw and have advanced with straight-sets wins over duos from NC State and Wake. Sunday they'll take on Elon's Salavdor Mijares and Neal Port.
Kelly and freshman Josh Peck are the No. 4 seed in the draw. They defeated NC State's Nick Horton and Michael Ogden 6-4, 6-2 Saturday to advance to a matchup Sunday with Elon's Mario Paccni and Felipe Sarrasague.
Senior Chad Hoskins and sophomore Arturo Schmidt will face a duo from Wofford after advancing through teams from USC Upstate and UNC Greensboro.
