CHAPEL HILL –– North Carolina's Graduation Success Rate for gymnastics student-athletes for the incoming cohort of academic years 2006-2009 is 100 percent. This is the 13th consecutive time the gymnastics team has achieved a 100 percent GSR.
North Carolina's overall GSR for all student-athletes is 82 percent in data released today by the NCAA.
The Graduation Success Rate measures graduation rates for student-athletes by team taking into account student-athletes who are on scholarship their first year and who graduate from their respective university or leave the program via transfer to another university or professional opportunities while in good academic standing.
Seven Carolina teams scored 100 percent in their respective GSRs, including women's fencing, field hockey, women's golf, gymnastics, women's swimming and diving, men's tennis and volleyball. Fifteen sports registered at least 80 percent in the GSR. It's the 13th consecutive 100 percent finish for gymnastics, women's golf's 11th straight and swimming and diving's eighth in a row.
“Graduation rates, regardless of the way they are measured, may fluctuate over a short period of time due to a number of factors, including personnel changes, transfers and student-athletes pursuing their professional dreams,” says Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. “The traditional timeline for completing a degree does not fit all of our students.”
The national average for all sports for GSR is 84 percent. Sixteen of Carolina's teams exceeded the national average in their respective sports – men's and women's cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field, women's fencing, field hockey, women's golf, gymnastics, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's tennis and volleyball. Rowing equaled its national average.
Men's tennis, field hockey, women's golf, gymnastics, women's swimming and diving and volleyball had the highest GSRs in the ACC in their respective sports.
“A dozen sports equaled or exceeded their GSR from the year before, but we want all of our sports to trend upward. The changes the University has made and the overall strength of our students will help drive future success.”
