UNC Surges Past Jayhawks In Second Half
November 19, 2016 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The sixth-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team held the Kansas Jayhawks without a shot for the last 64:26 of the match and got second half goals from Madison Schultz and Maya Worth in recording a 2-0 victory in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Fetzer Field before a crowd of 1,917 fans.
With the victory, the Tar Heels advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and they will play host to 12th-ranked Clemson Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Tigers and the Arkansas Razorbacks met in the initial second-round match at Fetzer on Friday with Clemson advancing on penalty kicks. The game ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie before the Tigers moved on 4-2 in penalty kicks.
Coach Anson Dorrance's Tar Heels improved to 15-3-4 on the season with the win over the Jayhawks, who saw their season end with a record of 11-6-4.
UNC outshot the Jayhawks 19-5 in the match while Kansas had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Kansas actually took five of the first eight shots in the match before UNC ran off 16 shots in a row, including a 12-0 margin in the second half. The possession advantage eventually resulted in goals by Madison Schultz in the 53rd minute and Maya Worth in the 79th minute.
The start of the game was similar to last Saturday's NCAA first-round game against Liberty when the Flames took two of the first three shots of the match. Carolina then rattled off 28 shots in a row and scored thrice in downing Liberty.
Kansas took the first two shots of the game with UNC goalkeeper Lindsey Harris making saves on Lois Heuchan in the second minute and Katie McClure in the fifth minute. In the 14th minute, UNC's Abby Elinsky had a great chance to break the game open but her shot was saved at the last second by Kansas' goalkeeper Regan Gibbs.
At 25:34 of the match, Katie McClure took the last shot the Jayhawks would have all night. It came off a corner kick and Harris grabbed it out of the air to earn her third and final save of the night. Over the last 20 minutes of the first half, UNC controlled the ball in Kansas' end, taking four shots. But the game went to halftime tied at 0-0.
Tar Heel head coach Anson Dorrance started the second half with three freshmen in the lineup at the forward spots – Bridgette Andrzejewski, Madison Schultz and Zoe Redei. The move paid off as Carolina's energy was off the charts in the opening minutes of the second half. Megan Buckingham and Annie Kingman both had good looks on goal before the Tar Heels broke through for the lead in the 53rd minute.
Annie Kingman fed Megan Buckingham who sent a ball across the box that found Madison Schultz. The Washington state freshman found enough room to blast a shot from 18 yards out that hit the underside of the cross bar and found the back of the net on the right side. Schultz has scored four goals this season, all in the last six games. All four of her goals have been game-winning tallies. She scored game-winners against Florida State in the regular-season finale, against Virginia in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals and against Liberty and Kansas in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
UNC almost made it 2-0 just over two minutes later but Julia Ashley's hard shot in the penalty area off a corner kick by Annie Kingman was cleared off the goal line by a Kansas defender.
In the 79th minute, the Tar Heels broke through for an insurance goal against the Jayhawks. Bridgette Andrzejewski dribbled into the box on the right side after getting behind the Kansas defense and sent a shot that Regan Gibbs made a point blank save on. The ball bounced fortuitously for the Tar Heels as Megan Buckingham gathered it in and sent a nifty pass across the penalty area where Maya Worth was there for an open net put away. It was Worth's second goal of the campaign.
UNC finished with an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Regan Gibbs made five saves for the Jayhawks and Lindsey Harris made three saves for Carolina. Those three saves give her 80 on the season, the second most in a single campaign in school history behind Molly Current's 89 saves in 1980.Team Stats
