Three members of the UNC men's soccer team have earned 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, recognizing achievement in the classroom and on the field. Junior David October was named to the first team and sophomores Nils Bruening and Alex Comsia were named to the third team, announced on Tuesday by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
The 33 players honored (11 each on first, second and third teams) represent a total of 28 schools. UNC is the only program to have three of its student-athletes recognized with the prestigious award.
October, from Cambridge, England, was picked for the top 11 after earning third-team honors last year. A business major with a 3.81 grade point average, he has two goals and two assists this season, playing in the midfield.
Bruening, from Hamburg, Germany, is a pre-business major with a 3.92 GPA. A forward, he leads the team in goals with eight, including two gamewinners. He is tied for second in points with 17.
Comsia, from North Vancouver, British Columbia, is also pre-business and carries a 3.98 GPA. The starting center back for the Tar Heels, who have allowed just 10 goals in 18 games this season, he ranks third on the team in minutes played.
Of the 33 players honored on the first, second and third teams, 16 have a GPA of at least 3.9. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.85. To be nominated, players must have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA and contribute on their teams as starters or key reserves.
