Carolina Visits Syracuse Sunday In NCAA Third Round

Both teams received a first-round bye in the NCAA Championship after receiving national seeds. Carolina earned a 3-2 victory in double overtime over No. 20 FGCU, while Syracuse advanced over Dartmouth in the second round.

• North Carolina has reached the Round of 16 for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.
• Carolina makes its 24th NCAA postseason appearance in 2016, and the 17th time in the last 18 seasons.
• The Tar Heels have hosted one postseason match at Fetzer Field every season since 2000.
• UNC is a top-16 national seed for the seventh time in the last nine seasons.
• Carolina, 35-19-7 in NCAA Championship history, has won the national title in 2001 and 2011, appeared in six College Cups - including four straight from 2008-11 - and made 10 trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals, most recently in 2014.

MELO TIES UNC ASSIST RECORD IN NCAA PLAY
• Senior Nico Melo's three assists last Sunday against FGCU tied a school record in the NCAA Championship. He leads UNC and is second in the ACC with eight assists this season.
LINDLEY NAMED ACC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
• Cam Lindley was named ACC Freshman of the Year in 2016, becoming the 8th Tar Heel to earn the award and first since Danny Garcia in 2012.
UNC PLACES LEAGUE HIGH SIX ON ALL-ACC TEAMS
• Cam Lindley was the only freshman selected to either the All-ACC first or second team, and joined teammate Mauricio Pineda on the All-Freshman team.
• Second team honors went to Colton Storm, Alan Winn and Zach Wright. Third team selections were Walker Hume and James Pyle.
SOMOANO OWNS TOP WIN PERCENTAGE
• Carlos Somoano owns the best winning percentage (.756) among active Division I men's soccer coaches with at least five years experience.
• Somoano is also the UNC program leader in winning percentage.
• He has guided all six of his teams to the NCAA Championship, winning the 2011 title.
NCAA LEADERS
Carolina ranks 3rd in the nation in team goals against average (0.53), shutout percentage (0.61), and fewest fouls (8.2) per game. On the offensive side, UNC is 8th in scoring (2.0) and third with 47 assists.
SCORING LEADERS
Tucker Hume leads Carolina with 18 on seven goals and four assists, while Nils Bruening has a team-leading eight goals and his 17 total points is tied for second on the club with Zach Wright, who has compiled five goals and seven assists. Nico Melo has a club high eight assists.
Chris Nanco tops the Syracuse attack with 15 points and seven goals scored. Jonathan Hagman (five goals, one assist) and Sergio Camargo (four goals, three assists) are tied for second with 11 points.
SERIES HISTORY
North Carolina leads the series 2-0-2 with Syracuse. This is the fourth meeting between the two clubs in the last two years. Earlier this season, the match was played to a 0-0 scoreless draw in Syracuse.
