Tar Heels Announce Tough Spring Slate
December 23, 2016 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – As is tradition, the North Carolina men's tennis team will tackle a challenging schedule this spring, facing tough competition from both nonconference and Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. The slate was recently finalized and opens on Jan. 14. For a full look, click here.
The Tar Heels open the spring schedule with seven non-conference matches at home over a two-week span, diving into a schedule that includes at least 11 meetings with teams that played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament and at least 13 against squads ranked in the top 50 at the end of last season.
A highlight of the nonconference schedule is the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Jan 27-28. Fans will have a great opportunity to watch four outstanding teams compete at Cone-Kenfield as the Tar Heels host Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Penn State, playing the Fighting Irish on Jan. 27 and either the Commodores or Nittany Lions on the 28th.
The Tar Heels open ACC play on March 7, hosting Duke.
UNC finished the 2016 season ranked No. 5 after setting a school record for wins (28-5 overall) and leading the nation with five All-America selections. Three of those players – junior Robert Kelly and seniors Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider – return this season for the Tar Heels.
