December 4, 2016 | Men's Soccer
No. 9 seed North Carolina (14-3-3) reached the College Cup with a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory over Providence this past Friday night in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels are making their seventh trip to the College Cup, and first since winning the program's second national title in 2011.
Fifth-seeded Stanford (14-3-4) went on the road in the quarterfinals to knock off fourth-seed Louisville, 2-0, on Saturday night in Louisville, Ky. The Cardinal is making their fifth appearance in the College Cup, and will attempt to become the first back-to-back national champion in a dozen years.
Carolina and Stanford met once previously in a NCAA semifinal back in 2001. The Tar Heels came away victorious with a 3-2 win in quadruple overtime, and went on to win their first of two national championships two days later in a 2-0 victory over Indiana.
The first semifinal pits fellow ACC member and No. 2 seed Wake Forest against sixth-seed Denver at 6 p.m. EST on ESPNU.
