UNC to Host NC State and William & Mary for Pink Meet

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill gymnastics team will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5, hosting East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival, NC State, and non-conference opponent, William & Mary. This will be the Tar Heels' second competition in the 2016 season against both the Wolfpack and the Tribe.
“[Friday is a] Pink Meet so we want people to come help us support the Get REAL & HEEL program here on campus and the battle against breast cancer,” said UNC head coach Derek Galvin.
Fans are encouraged to come to Carmichael Arena dressed in pink to suppot breast cancer awareness.
This past Saturday, North Carolina hosted NC State, Pittsburgh and Bowling Green State in a quad meet. After a highly competitive meet, the Tar Heels finished in third place with a score of 193.400. UNC defeated Pittsburgh (193.350), but fell to NC State (194.900) and Bowling Green State (194.800).
North Carolina notched an impressive team performance on Saturday afternoon, and the Tar Heels hope to carry the momentum into this weekend's competition.
A number of UNC gymnasts had stellar individual performances, which resulted in 10 season-best scores.
Three Tar Heels athletes notched season-best scores on the uneven bars, including Lexi Cappalli (9.675), Josselyn Mackey (9.750) and Morgan Lane (9.800).
On the balance beam, two North Carolina gymnasts – Kaitlynn Hedelund (9.775) and Mackey (9.725) – had season-best scores.
Lauren Weisel (9.775), Madison Nettles (9.625) and Cappalli (9.750) closed out the quad meet with season-best scores on the floor exercise.
Additionally, Lane set a new season-high of 39.150 in the all-around competition to take third place among all competitors. Cappalli took eighth place with a season-best score of 38.325.
“We are still recovering from some ankle and foot issues with some people, but, hopefully, we'll be feeling a little bit stronger by Friday night,” said Galvin.
This weekend's opponents:
-NC State emerged victorious in Chapel Hill, N.C. after posting a season-high score of 194.900. Wolfpack gymnasts had six career-high scores and eight top-five finishes throughout the course of the meet. Brittni Watkins finished second in the all-around competition with a score of 39.175, while Chelsea Knight scored a 38.375 to take seventh place.
-In the Ken Anderson Invitational on Saturday, William & Mary took first place with a season-high score of 191.375, defeating Temple (191.175), West Chester (190.975), Southern Connecticut State (188.850) and Ursinus (187.700). The Tribe notched season-best scores on the uneven bars (48.275) and balance beam (47.400).
“We are looking forward to performing in Carmichael Arena again,” said Galvin. “We love competing there.”
Galvin continued, “The team is fired up and ready to compete.”
Following this weekend's competition, North Carolina will return to action on Friday, Feb. 19 in Washington, D.C. The Tar Heels will take on two East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rivals, No. 17 George Washington and No. 22 New Hampshire, in a tri-meet starting at 7 p.m. in Charles E. Smith Center.
