February 16, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Schnur, a communication studies major from Pickering, Ontario, helped lead UNC to the program's first-ever ITA National Indoor Team Championship over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va. The Tar Heels beat No. 1 Virginia, the tournament's host, 4-2 on Monday for the title. The UNC win broke the Cavaliers' streak of 140 consecutive wins over ACC opponents.
Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Schnur earned two key wins in the tournament, including one over defending NCAA singles champion Ryan Shane of Virginia, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(4), that tied the championship match at 2-2. Schnur is 3-4 this season in singles and 6-1 in doubles, with two of his singles victories coming against opponents ranked in the top 35.
UNC is 10-0 this season and ranked No. 7 nationally. The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday, hosting Wofford for a 1 p.m. match at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
