March 26, 2016 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- Zac Ryan and Burton Dulaney combined for a four-hit shutout as No. 21 Georgia Tech took the series decider from No. 3 North Carolina 6-0 Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Kel Johnson and Wade Bailey homered for the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 18-5 and 5-4 in the ACC. Carolina dropped to 19-4 and 6-3 in league play with the loss.
Georgia Tech scored an unearned run against Jason Morgan (2-2) in the top of the first and never relinquished the lead. Johnson's two-run homer extended the advantage to 3-0 in the fifth before the visitors added three more in the seventh. Johnson, Bailey and Matt Gonzalez had three hits each for the Yellow Jackets, who out-hit the Tar Heels 11-4.
Carolina got a runner into scoring position in each of the first three innings, but never scratched against Ryan (1-0), who worked a career-long 6.0 innings. The Tar Heels threatened in the seventh against Dulaney, but Brian Miller was called out at first on a would-be infield single to end the rally.
Dulaney retired the final eight Tar Heels in order for a nine-out save, his second of the year.
UNC will return to action on Tuesday, March 29, against Davidson.
