Clashes With the Cavaliers
Carolina has had tremendous success over the years against Virginia, going 83-30-1 in a total of 114 contests dating back to 1984. In games in Charlottesville, the Heels are 29-9-1.
UNC brings a 12-game winning streak into this weekend's series, including outscoring the Cavaliers, 49-14 in last year's three-game series. The Tar Heels topped UVA, 24-3, in five innings in game two of the 2015 series on March 28, matching or breaking eight team and individual single-game records, including launching an unprecedented seven home runs in just five innings.
The Tar Heels are 47-10 all time during ACC play and 8-7 in the ACC Tournament. UNC and UVA last faced in the ACC Tournament in 2008, when the Tar Heels shut out the 'Hoos, 6-0, in the first round.
Chicago Bandits Draft Kristen Brown
Senior shortstop Kristen Brown was selected by the Chicago Bandits in the fourth round with the 24th overall pick of the 2016 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) College Draft on April 14. It is the second straight season that a Tar Heel has been drafted, following Amber Parrish's selection by the Pennsylvania Rebellion in 2015. Should Brown sign a contract, she will be the 13th Tar Heel alum to play professional softball for the NPF and the first to play for the Bandits. Brown was the only ACC player selected in the 2016 draft.
Tar Heels Earn Four ACC Weekly Honors
Carolina has nabbed four weekly honors from the ACC with junior Kendra Lynch as the reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week. Her April 11 selection was her second of the season, following a nod on Feb. 15 after opening weekend. Additionally, Kristen Brown (Feb. 22) and Berlynne Delamora (April 4) have both earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
Lynch became the first Tar Heel since 2013 to win ACC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 15 after tossing a pair of complete-game shutouts on opening weekend. An extra-innings victory at No. 10 Georgia helped the Tar Heel junior to her second award on April 11.
Brown was named ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after leading the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with a 1.375 slugging percentage and three home runs.
Delamora led UNC to a 4-1 week including a series victory over Louisville. The Tar Heel third baseman hit .667 (8-for-12) with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base percentage, and drove in several key runs including a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in game two against the Cardinals.
