Tar Heels Earn Three Firsts At Occoquan Sprints
April 3, 2016 | Women's Rowing
UNC won three events and placed second in another in a day of rowing competition at the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax Station, Va. The Tar Heel varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four all claimed firsts.
“I am incredibly proud of all of our boats today,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “The conditions were really tough, race times were uncertain and they all handled it very well. They didn't let any of the outside, uncontrollable issues negatively affect them and they came ready to race.”
Racing was delayed in the morning by very high headwinds and rough water conditions. When the action began, it was with floating starts or with boats paddling into the starts.
Still, the Tar Heels thrived. In addition to the three firsts, the second varsity eight was second in its final and the third varsity eight took fourth in the same field. The second varsity four was second in the petite final. Both varsity fours were manned completely by novice rowers.
“I am proud of the freshmen stepping up into the V4 and 2V4 events and racing those well,” Haney said. “The N8 also had a great race and feel good about what they are doing. I am proud of the 3V8 stepping up into the 2V8 race. I feel really good about the race the 2V8 put together and what they have accomplished this week. I am also very proud and excited for the V8 for racing well and getting first.
“A great day of racing for Carolina!”
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Knecht Cup, on Saturday and Sunday in West Windsor Township, N.J.
