No. 20 Tar Heels Top No. 21 Pirates, 9-1
May 11, 2016 | Baseball
Brian Miller led off the bottom of the first with a hustle double and scored on a Riley RBI single. Riley then doubled and scored in the fourth before Ramirez's long homer to right center made it 3-0 in the fifth. Carolina (31-17) took advantage of a wild ECU bullpen in a five-run sixth, walking five times in the frame. Pirate pitchers walked eight batters on the night and hit another.
Hunter Williams started for UNC and worked a pair of scoreless innings before Bogucki took over in the third. The junior right-hander allowed just three hits in 4.1 innings to improve to 4-5 on the year and has now earned the decision in three consecutive games.
Ramirez and Zack Gahagan each had a pair of hits as the Tar Heels out-hit the Pirates (30-17-1) by a 12-7 margin.
Spencer Trayner retired all five batters he faced in the seventh and eighth and Taylor Sugg got the final three outs to secure UNC's 21st non-conference win in 24 tries against one of the nation's most difficult schedules.
Carolina plays its final non-conference regular season game of the year Wednesday when the Tar Heels visit UNCW at 6 p.m. in Wilmington.
