Carolina Finishes 14th At NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team had its inspiring season come to an end on Monday night when the Tar Heels finished 14th at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. The Tar Heels shot 6-over par in the final round of stroke play and missed qualifying for match play.

“We came up a little short today,” head coach Jan Mann said. “The team knew they would have to have a flawless day to make a move and advance. They gave their best effort out there. (Associate head coach) Leah (Buchmann) and I are very proud of this team!”

Carolina was led by Kelly Whaley with an even par round in the final round. Whaley finished the NCAA Championships tied for 61st at 9-over par. Leslie Cloots, Elizabeth Mallett and Bryana Nguyen each shot rounds of 2-over par 74s. Mallett, the lone senior on the team, finished the tournament at 4-over par and tied for 34th. Cloots finished tied for 59th at 8-over par while Nguyen finished tied for 79th at 21-over. Lexi Harkins posted a 3-over 75 and finished 5-over par and tied for 46th.

Carolina's season ends with the team accomplishing a goal that seemed out of reach by many. The team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2012. It's only the fourth time in program history where Carolina qualified for the NCAA Championships without an All-ACC golfer. Carolina outperformed its seed in the NCAA Stanford Regional when the team was seeded 12th. Carolina once again outperformed its seed at the NCAA Championships, finishing 14th after being seeded 23rd.
