No. 17 Tar Heels Blank VCU, 11-0
May 4, 2016 | Baseball
Carolina (29-15) exploded for six runs against VCU starter Ben Dum (0-3) in the decisive second inning. The Tar Heels sent 10 men to the plate in the frame, highlighted by RBI doubles from Miller and Brandon Riley.
Kyle Datres led off the third with a double to left and later scored on a Miller groundout. UNC added two more in the sixth on a Ramirez run-scoring single.
That would be more than enough support for Morgan, who had his best outing since his seven innings of shutout ball at Duke on March 20. The sophomore right-hander needed just 67 pitches over six innings to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Hunter Williams, A.J. Bogucki and Spencer Trayner each worked a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to end it just ahead of threatening skies. The start of the game was delayed 44 minutes due to a severe thunderstorm warning.
Warmoth's two-run single in the eighth accounted for the game's final runs. The Tar Heels reached double figures for the 16th time this season and shut out their opponent for the seventh time. Tuesday marked the third time UNC has done both in the same game, joining wins over Fairfield and No. 2 South Carolina.
Matt Davis had two hits in three trips to lead VCU (30-16).
Carolina opens a three-game series against No. 5 Louisville Friday night at 6 p.m. Postgame fireworks are scheduled for after the game.
