June 21, 2016 | Baseball
Four-year Carolina baseball letterman Jacob Stallings became the 65th player in program history to reach the Major Leagues when he was called up to start Sunday for the Pittsburgh Pirates. A leader on two College World Series teams in his career from 2009-12, Stallings is the 10th Tar Heel to appear in an MLB game this season.
Stallings was a second-team All-ACC selection as a senior in 2012 before being selected in the seventh round by the Pirates. The Brentwood, Tennessee, native ranks seventh in school history with 56 career doubles, 24 of which came during the 2012 campaign. Stallings led UNC with 42 RBIs that year as the Tar Heels finished 46-16 and hosted the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
The reliable backstop was a key member of two CWS teams, including the 2011 group that went 51-16. In his four years at Carolina, Stallings' teams posted a record of 183-72.
