Tar Heels Open 2016 With Victory Over Cal Poly
August 26, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Carolina waisted little time in scoring its first goal of the season. Nico Melo worked his way up the touch line and delivered a pass at the door step for Alan Winn in the ninth minute of play.
Freshman Jeremy Kelly was one of the first substitutions for the Tar Heels, and that decision paid dividends when he found Tucker Hume posted up against a Cal Poly defender. The 6-5 red-shirt senior outmuscled the Mustang player and shoveled a low shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 UNC advantage in the 38th minute.
Unable to muster a shot in the first half, the Mustangs pieced together an early flurry out of halftime. A corner led to a header from Ruben Duran that was saved by Carolina keeper James Pyle to keep the clean sheet in tact.
Just minutes later, David October was tripped inside the box, and he promptly buried his penalty for a 3-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
Cal Poly's Sebastian Herran rang a 25-yard free kick off the cross bar later in the second stanza, but that was the last good scoring opportunity for the visiting Mustangs.
North Carolina (1-0) hosts Saint Louis on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Billikins earned a 1-0 victory over the Demon Deacons on Friday in Winston-Salem.
