Bernatchez Leads UNC In 6-2 Win At Penn
September 4, 2016 | Field Hockey
“We made progress on the weekend,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “I thought we played better today than we did on Friday. We're starting to move the ball better and become better connected.”
Bernatchez's first goal came in the 20th minute, on the Tar Heels' third penalty corner of the game. The Tar Heels added another five minutes later, as two Pennsylvania products teamed up to score in their home state. Senior Lauren Moyer had the goal, with junior Gab Major on the assist.
The Tar Heels' third goal was from freshman Eef Andriessen, who put the ball in after a shot by senior Emma Bozek deflected off a defender. Bernatchez scored her second less than two minutes later, deflecting in a penalty corner shot by sophomore Ashley Hoffman.
With the Tar Heels up 4-0, the host Quakers got on the board on a penalty corner just before halftime. Sofia Palacios had the goal, assisted by Paige Meily.
Major opened the second-half scoring just 50 seconds into the period. Junior Sam Night drove the baseline and passed to Major, who sent a reverse-stick shot in for a 5-1 lead.
The Tar Heels' final goal was from redshirt freshman Marissa Creatore, who scored for the first time in her Carolina career. She got the ball from Andriessen, who earned her first UNC assist.
Penn's Palacios scored again in the 64th minute to make the final 6-2.
Next up for UNC is the home opener, which is also the Atlantic Coast Conference opener. The Tar Heels host Wake Forest on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
