Since the start of last season, Cam Lindley had assisted on 21 percent of the North Carolina men's soccer team's 77 goals entering Sunday, with 20 other players combining for the remaining 79 percent.
So in the fourth-ranked Tar Heels' 4-0 victory at Virginia Tech on Sunday, it might not have come as much of a surprise that Lindley assisted on what proved to be the goal that clinched UNC's third straight Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title.
After a scoreless first half, Lindley headed a pass from Jelani Pieters to Zach Wright, who handed the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead on his goal just a minute into the second half.
Wright's goal sparked UNC, which scored three more goals over the next 16 minutes, 48 seconds. The last of those came when Lindley came streaking down the field and scored on an assist from Pieters. With the goal and assist, Lindley has 13 points over the last six matches.
After recording just one assist over his previous seven games, Lindley has two in as many matches, giving him 10 on the season. He's the first Tar Heel to record double-digit assists since Enzo Martinez had 11 during the 2011 season, when UNC won the national championship.
Field hockey concludes ACC play
In the field hockey team's last home game of the season – played Friday against Duke at Duke's Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium, where UNC has played and practiced all season as a new on-campus facility is built – lone senior Gab Major was honored on Senior Night.
But Major's cousin, Duke's Alyssa Chillano, spoiled the celebration. Chillano scored both of second-ranked Blue Devils' first-half goals, which No. 5 UNC couldn't overcome in a 3-2 loss.
The Tar Heels outshot Duke 18-6 and held a 10-3 edge on penalty corners. But the Blue Devils' defense, which entered Friday ranked fourth nationally in goals against average, was stifling in the circle.
In the aftermath of Friday's game, the bracket for the ACC field hockey championship was released Saturday. UNC, the No. 5 seed, will face fourth-seeded Wake Forest at 11 a.m. Nov. 2 at Louisville's Trager Stadium.
Fountain leads men's golf
Through the first five holes of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Sunday at the Isleworth Country Club, the men's golf team sat at 11-over-par. But the final 13 holes proved much more favorable for the Tar Heels.
Preyer Fountain, William Register and Ben Griffin each carded scores of 2-under over that stretch, helping UNC finish the first round tied for 11th in the 17-team field with a 6-over 294.
Fountain paced the Tar Heels, shooting a 2-under 70. He sits in a four-way tie for seventh place entering Monday's second round.
Rowing finds success at prestigious race
After starting at the back of the pack during Saturday's Head of the Charles Regatta, the rowing team's strong performance ensured it won't have to do so again at next year's event.
The Tar Heels' lineup – consisting of coxswain Sofia Triana, stroke Maria Marroquin, Sally Stanley, Melanie Hussey, Morgan Donnelly, Kathryn Johnson, Kelly Williams, Caitlin Beakes, and Paige Colpo in the bow seat – finished 18th of 40 boats in the Women's Club Eights category. UNC's time of 17:44.074 was less than a second behind Boston College.
With its 18th-place finish, the Tar Heels earned an invitation to the 2018 race and a better starting spot.
Women's soccer's winning streak ends
The women's soccer team outshot Louisville 19-12 and held an 11-5 edge in corner kicks. But both teams combined for just seven shots on goal in Sunday's match at WakeMed Soccer Park, where the fifth-ranked Tar Heels battled to a scoreless draw.
With the draw, UNC's eight-game winning streak was snapped. The result could also play a large factor in the seeding for the upcoming ACC Tournament.
The Tar Heels (12-2-1, 8-0-1 ACC) currently sit in second place in the conference, two points behind Duke (16-1, 9-0). They face Notre Dame at WakeMed Soccer Park on Thursday, when the Blue Devils visit No. 12 Virginia.
Doubles tandems shine
By winning the Oracle ITA Masters in September, Alle Sanford has already qualified for the singles bracket at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. But she and Sara Daavettila could qualify in doubles Monday at the ITA Carolinas Regional.
The duo, ranked No. 38 nationally, defeated No. 26 Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin of N.C. State, 6-4, 6-2, on Sunday. With the win, Sanford and Daavettila will face another Tar Heel tandem, No. 12 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham, in the finals of the doubles draw.
Aney and Graham advanced Sunday with a 6-1, 6-4 win over the UNC duo of Makenna Jones and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer.
Pittsburgh slows volleyball's momentum
After not posting a hitting percentage above .300 through its first 14 matches, the volleyball team entered Friday's contest at Pittsburgh having eclipsed that mark in three straight games.
But in a 3-0 loss (25-18, 25-10, 25-21) against the Panthers, the Tar Heels were once again plagued by errors.
UNC committed 13 attack errors, compared to 27 kills, en route to hitting .173 on 81 total attempts. The Tar Heels also had eight service errors in their first ACC sweep since their visit to Pittsburgh on Sept. 27, 2015.
