Tar Heels Win ITA Carolinas Regional Doubles Crown

CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina doubles team of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham defeated teammates Alle Sanford and Sara Daavettila in the finals of the ITA Carolinas Regional on Monday afternoon from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Ranked No. 12 in the nation, Aney and Graham earned the victory in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, over the 38th ranked combo of Sanford and Daavettila.Â
In the singles final held Monday morning, No. 55 Lauren Proctor of Winthrop took down #54 Samantha Harris of Duke, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
The winners advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Nov. 1-5, in Indian Wells, California. Sanford is already qualified in singles after winning the Oracle ITA Masters, one of the elite fall collegiate tournaments held in southern California, back in September.
North Carolina dominated the field made up of programs from North and South Carolina over the last five days in Chapel Hill. Carolina duo Makenna Jones and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer made a run to the semifinals, giving the Tar Heels three of the four teams in the semis.
The Tar Heels also placed four in the Round of 16 singles, and three (Aney, Daavettila and Graham) advanced to the quarterfinals. Daavettila made the semifinals, before being upended at the hands of runner-up Harris on Sunday.
Carolina will host the annual Kitty Harrison Invitational on Nov. 3-5 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
