Four Qualify For Fall National Championships
October 27, 2017 | Women's Tennis
The North Carolina women's tennis team will be represented by four participants at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held November 1-5 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, California and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.Â
Freshman Alle Sanford was the first women to qualify for the 64-player singles draw by virtue of winning the Oracle ITA Masters event in Malibu, California back in September. The rookie from Westerville, Ohio, is 10-2 in singles this fall, and that includes a win over No. 1 Ena Shibahara of UCLA in the Oracle ITA Masters title match.
Junior Jessie Aney and sophomores Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham were each extended at-large invitational to participate in the singles competition.
Aney, ranked No. 22 in singles, is 9-3 thus far in her third season with the Tar Heels. She has a pair of top-20 wins to her credit over #12 Josie Kuhlman of Florida and #20 Meible Chi of Duke.
Daavettila, the No. 4 singles player in the nation, got off to a bit of a slow start in her sophomore campaign, but was 4-1 last weekend in the ITA Regionals to improve to 6-6 overall. The Rochester, Minnesota, native's best win to date this fall by ranking is over No. 28 Ingrid Martins of South Carolina.
At No. 42 in the singles rankings, Graham is 5-3 in her second season in Chapel Hill. She reached the Main Draw of the Riviera/ITA All-Americans earlier in October and won three matches last week at the ITA Carolina Regionals.Â
In the doubles field, Aney and Graham qualified earlier this week by winning the Carolina Regional in Chapel Hill. The runner-up in the regional, Daavettila and Sanford, earned an at-large bid to compete next weekend.
Aney/Graham are No. 12 nationally and have compiled a 7-1 record this fall, while Daavettila and Sanford are 38th and have a 5-1 mark. The lone loss came to Aney and Graham in Monday's regional final.
The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, and is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.
