SAN JOSE DEL CABO, MEXICO - Bryana Nguyen is tied for third in round one of the Battle at the Beach after tying her career-low 68 to lead the Tar Heels. Carolina sits at 10-over-par 294 to finish the day in ninth place.

The senior from Columbia, Md., has positioned herself in the Carolina record books at times during her career, but was struggling to find consistency on the course this fall - her previous low on the season was a 73. However, on Friday she was able to knock in birdies throughout the day, totaling six on the round.

"I was really happy for her," head coach Jan Mann said. "She struck the ball very well. She played extremely patient. She just had very good course management and stayed in it the whole time. I was very proud of her."

Kelly Whaley shot a 74 and is tied for 36th. Ava Bergner shot a 75 and is tied for 42nd. Brynn Walker shot a 77 to round out the scoring and is tied for 62nd. Mariana Ocano shot a 78 and is tied for 65th.

"I thought Kelly Whaley played really well most of the day, and then coming in she had some trouble," Mann said. "That was unfortunate because she had really performed well all day, and I think she had worked hard at staying in the process and one shot at a time, and I think she just got a little out of it there. I expect her to bounce back tomorrow."

"I'm very hopeful for tomorrow," Mann said. "I really feel like this team can shoot a lot lower tomorrow. I'm staying very hopeful."

Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest and Leonie Harm of Houston are tied for the top spot after one round at 4-under-par 67. Oklahoma leads the field at 3-under.
