Flanagan Becomes First American Woman To Win NYC Marathon In 40 Years

NEW YORK - Former Tar Heel distance runner Shalane Flanagan won the TCS New York City Marathon Sunday in 2:26:53. She is the first American woman to win the event since 1977.
Flanagan attended the University of North Carolina until she decided to turn pro in 2004.Â
In her three years at Carolina, Flanagan was a 15-time ACC Champion, 14-time All-America, four-time national champion and a 2004 recipient of the Patterson Medal - the top athletic honor given at the university.
Flanagan is also a four-time Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016), an American record holder in the 3000m (indoor), 5000m (indoor) and 15km road race, and an Olympic Silver medalist (10,000m - 2008).
