No. 7 Carolina Tops Coastal, 7-6

CHAPEL HILL --- Kyle Datres homered and drove in three runs to lead No. 7 North Carolina to a 7-6 win over Coastal Carolina Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Cody Roberts added an RBI double in the eighth that proved to be the game-winner when the Chanticleers rallied to put the tying run on second in the ninth. Brett Daniels picked up his third relief win in as many appearances for the Tar Heels, who travel to Tallahassee for a three-game ACC series with No. 12 Florida State starting Friday.
Carolina (19-6) opened the scoring with a Logan Warmoth solo home run in the first, and Datres made it 2-0 with his solo bomb in the fourth. Warmoth's homer was his fifth of the year and stretched his reached base streak to 40 games.
Coastal (15-10) responded with solo blasts of its own in the fifth and sixth to tie it against Tyler Baum. Baum was stellar early, retiring the first 10 Chanticleers in order, but Wood Myers and Billy Cooke took him deep to pull the visitors even.
After a key 1-2-3 seventh from Daniels, the Tar Heels got to Coastal's Austin Kitchen (2-2) for four runs in the home half of the inning. Brian Miller's solid single to right put UNC in front before a Brandon Martorano RBI walk. Datres then singled home two more to give Carolina its biggest lead of the night.
Roberts' run-scoring double to left center restored the Tar Heels' four-run lead in the eighth, but the Chants kept coming in the ninth. Cory Wood's three-run homer off Hiatt made it a 7-6 game before Matt Beaird singled to put the tying run on base. Hiatt ultimately got the job done, stranding pinch-runner Josh Crump on second thanks to a nice play by Roberts to throw out Cooke at first on a soft grounder.
Zack Hopeck started for Coastal and allowed two runs over 5.1 innings.
Carolina returns to ACC action on Friday when the Tar Heels visit Florida State for the first time since 2011.
