Nguyen Leads Heels In Strong First Day At Bryan National
April 2, 2017 | Women's Golf
Browns Summit, N.C. – The Carolina women's golf team opened the Bryan National Collegiate with a strong first day performance. After two rounds, the team stands in fourth place, led by Bryana Nguyen who is tied for fourth individually.
Nguyen opened her day with a 1-under par 71 and followed that round with a flawless 3-under par 69 in the afternoon that featured no bogeys. The 69 ties Nguyen's lowest round since her freshman season.
At the time, Carolina's first round was the eighth best in the tournament's 20-year history. The team shot a 2-under par 286 which gave Carolina a three shot lead heading into the afternoon. In addition to Nguyen's 71, the Tar Heels were led by Leslie Cloots's 70, Brynn Walker's 72, and Kelly Whaley's 73. Also for Carolina, Lexi Harkins shot a 76 and as individuals Mariana Ocano and Cheni Xu shot 74 and 82 respectively.
The Tar Heels second round started strong after an eagle by Walker on the par-5 third hole. Walker rode the eagle to a 3-over par 75. The rest of the Tar Heel scores included Harkins with a 75, Cloots with a 76, Whaley with a 76, and Ocano and Xu with matching 82s. Overall, the team shot a 7-over par 295.
“The team played well,” said head coach Jan Mann. “First round was very strong. They played with a tremendous amount of confidence and patience. The second round was going well until the end. They may have lost their focus just a bit. It was a very long day playing 36 holes. They did not finish as strong as we would have liked but looking forward to tomorrow. The team knows they can go low!”
Number three Alabama had the best team round of the day with a 6-under par 282 in the second round to take the overall lead at 3-under par. Georgia is five shots back at 2-over par and they are followed by Baylor at 3-over and Carolina at 5-over par.
The Bryan National is Carolina's last tune-up before the ACC Championship and features a strong field. Overall, 11 Golfstat's top 40 teams in the country are playing in the tournament.
Tomorrow's final round will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. EDT. Carolina will tee off from hole Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6. They'll play alongside fifth place South Carolina and sixth place North Carolina State.
