
Carter Sets ACC Singles Record As Tar Heels Sweep Panthers

CHAPEL HILL – No. 3 North Carolina women's tennis registered another convincing ACC victory, beating Pittsburgh 7-0 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Saturday. The win pushes the Tar Heels to 26-2 on the season and 12-1 in ACC play, while the Panthers fall to 3-15 overall and 0-14 in conference matches.
In this afternoon's win, second-ranked Hayley Carter registered the 162nd singles victory of her career. The win gives her sole possession of the ACC record for most career singles victories, adding another accolade to Carter's already-decorated career as a Tar Heel.
UNC began a strong outing by easily taking the doubles point. Sara Daavettila and Makenna Jones finished first on court three. The freshman duo blanked Pittsburgh's Gabriela Rezende and Jovana Knezevic 6-0. On court one, Hayley Carter and Maggie Kane cruised to a 6-2 win, defeating Amber Washington and Callie Frey. Cassandra Vazquez and Alexa Graham were up 5-4 on court two when the opening point was clinched.
Carolina carried momentum into singles play, winning all six first sets. Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, playing on court five, was the first off after a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Pittsburgh's Clara Lucas.
No. 8 Daavettila quickly followed suit on court two. She defeated Audrey Ann Blakely 6-0, 6-1 and put the Tar Heels one win away from taking the match.
On court three, Alexa Graham, ranked 55th in the nation, registered a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gabriela Rezende to clinch the match.
Moments later, No. 94 Jones beat Pittsburgh's Callie Frey 6-4, 6-2. Her straight-set win pushed the match score to 5-0 in favor of the Tar Heels, leaving the two seniors to complete the sweep.
After battling to 10-8 tiebreaker win in the first set, No. 2 Carter dominated Amber Washington 6-0 in the second set, earning her the ACC record.
Rachael James-Baker, playing on court six, won 6-3, 7-5 over Jovanna Knezevic to sweep the match.
UNC concludes its regular season tomorrow afternoon, hosting Syracuse at 1 p.m. Sunday's match will be Senior Day at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, and the team will honor the successful campaigns of Rachael James-Baker and Hayley Carter.
