Women's Golf Selected For NCAA Athens Regional
April 27, 2017 | Women's Golf
Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team was selected as the ninth seed in the NCAA Athens Regional Tuesday morning.
Head Coach Jan Mann has led to the Tar Heels to regionals in each of her eight seasons. This marks the 24th time in program history that the Tar Heels have reached the NCAA Regional.
Last year, the Tar Heels qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third time under Mann and the 15th time in program history. In Eugene, Carolina finished 14th of 24 teams.
The NCAA Athens Regional will be held on May 8th through May 10th at the University of Georgia Golf Course which features a par-72, 6,335 yard setup.
Eighteen teams and six individuals will participate in each of four regional tournaments to determine the championship field. The top six teams and three individuals who are not members of the qualifying schools advance to the NCAA Championships, occurring from May 19th-May 24th at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
“We are excited to be traveling relatively close to home to compete in the NCAA Regionals,” said Head Coach Jan Mann. “The team is not familiar with the course but Leah Buchmann, our associate head coach, won there as a collegiate player and our team won the NCAA preview tournament in 2012. There are some very strong teams competing at Georgia and with only six teams advancing to the NCAA Nationals, you have to have three solid rounds to advance. We are confident that this team will be up for the challenge!”
North Carolina has faced all of the following teams at least once during the regular season: Alabama, Auburn, Augusta, Baylor, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan State, Tennessee, UCF, Wake Forest. The Tar Heels amassed a 14-17 record against the ten schools over the course of the year.
