Tar Heels Cruise To 7-0 ACC Win At Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – North Carolina improved to 6-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday afternoon with a 7-0 men's tennis win over Clemson at the Tigers' Hoke-Sloan Tennis Center. The Tar Heels, ranked 11th nationally, are now 19-2 overall.
The match was played indoors due to windy conditions in Clemson. Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Charlottesville, Va., to take on No. 4 Virginia on Sunday.
At Clemson, UNC opened by claiming the doubles point for the sixth time in this spring's ACC play. Senior Ronnie Schneider and sophomore Anu Kodali teamed for a 6-2 Tar Heel win at No. 3, but Clemson's No. 82 team of Daffra Sanon and Sam Edwards upset UNC's Robert Kelly and William Blumberg, who are ranked ninth, on Court 1. That made Court 2 the deciding match, and senior Jack Murray and freshman Simon Soendergaard earned the point for Carolina, winning 6-4.
In singles, UNC won five first sets with room to spare, falling only on Court 2, where Blumberg dropped a tiebreaker, 8-6. The other five courts went on to straight-sets wins. Blumberg also won, but had to work a bit harder – he defeated Sanon 6-2 in the second set, then won the tiebreaker (played instead of a third set) 10-8.
Schneider, at No. 1, was the first to finish, winning 6-0, 6-1. Kelly then won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 to put the Tar Heels within a point of the win. Soendergaard provided the critical point at No. 4, winning 6-2, 6-3 to give UNC the 4-0 margin of victory it needed.
Rounding out the lineup, Murray won 6-0, 6-0 on Court 5, and sophomore Blaine Boyden earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory on Court. 6.
