Tar Heels Finish Eighth At ACC Championship
May 15, 2017 | Women's Rowing
CLEMSON, S.C. – North Carolina finished eighth overall Sunday at the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship, hosted by Clemson on Lake Hartwell. Tar Heel sophomore Kelly Williams was named to the All-ACC second team, announced following the event.
Virginia won the conference title, its eighth in a row and 17th in the 18-year history of the championship, to claim the ACC's automatic berth in this year's NCAA Rowing Championships. Syracuse was second with 83 points, followed by Notre Dame (73), Duke (65), Louisville (62), Clemson (49), Boston College (28), UNC (20) and Miami (19).
"I am proud of how all the boats performed today." UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "Everyone contributed to the team win over Miami. I'm also incredibly impressed with the 3V8+ who was the first boat to advance from the heats into the grand finals since we have moved to a nine-team ACC Championship.
"Every year we just step a little bit closer to our competition here at ACCs. Having the 3rd Varsity 8+ advance to the grands will hopefully open the door for us in the future."
The third varsity eight placed third in its morning heat then took sixth in the grand final in a time of 6:54.6. The Tar Heel lineup was Adelaide Cooke (coxswain), Madelyn Krebs, Melanie Hussey, Bridget Tarnowski, Mackenzie Drake, Caleigh Sewell, Caeli Harr, Kate Hickert and Alexis Amato.
That race led off the evening finals, followed by the second varsity four. UNC was fourth in that event in its heat and placed second in the petite final. The lineup was Samantha Hoelzer (coxswain), Devin Finney, Elizabeth Farley, Katie Bell and Caitlin Beakes.
In the varsity four, the Tar Heels were fourth in their heat and second in the petite final in 7:37.47. The Carolina lineup was Sofia Traian (coxswain), Alexa Postiglione, Ellen Minaudo, Jackie Kenny and Sally Stanley.
In the second varsity eight, UNC was fourth in its heat to reach the petite final then won that final in 6:48.00. UNC's lineup was Maggie Lusk (coxswain), Laura Naylor, Emma Gilbert, Sara Zetterberg, Morgan Donnelly, Alex Davis, Stephanie Wangerin, Mandi Biondi and Egan Berne.
The final race was the varsity eight. UNC was fifth in the morning heats in 7:11.49 and third in the petite final in 6:44.12. That lineup was Bethany Brake (coxswain), Allie Martin, Mallory Young, Paige Colpo, Maria Marroquin, Kelly Williams, Kathryn Johnson, Margaret High and Abby Hudspeth.
"As we wrap up the year, I am incredibly proud of what this team has accomplished," Haney said. "We worked on resetting our team culture with a "team over self" mentality. This culture created an atmosphere of ownership, responsibility, communication, and best of all, pride. Each race weekend I would tell the team my goal is for them to get off the bus proud, but to get back in the bus even prouder. I feel like we accomplished this goal throughout the season and I am honored to have worked with this team this year."
