ATHENS, Ga. – North Carolina freshman William Blumberg made more program history on Sunday when he earned a spot in Monday's NCAA singles championship match. And as was the case in the NCAA team championship, it will be UNC vs. Virginia in a battle for the crown.
Blumberg advanced with a 6-2, 7-6(1) win over Mississippi State's Nuno Borges Sunday afternoon at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. He'll play Virginia senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski on Monday.
“It's incredible,” Blumberg said after his win. “I honestly couldn't have even dreamed of something like this. My game has just been clicking at the right time.
“I worked hard before this to get in shape and I've been feeling pretty good and doing pretty well. I'm honestly just really happy.”
Blumberg, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA team tournament and the ITA National Rookie of the Year, is now 31-2 as a Tar Heel.
On Monday he'll face Kwiatkowski for the fourth time this spring. Their first meeting of the season was unfinished, on Feb. 19 in Charlottesville in the ITA National Team Indoor semifinals. In the ACC Tournament semifinals in Rome, Ga., on April 29, Blumberg won 7-5, 6-4. The two met again in the NCAA Tournament finals on May 23, with Blumberg again winning in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
