DURHAM, N.C. --- J.B. Bukauskas, Josh Hiatt and Logan Warmoth were named first-team All-Americans by Baseball America, the venerable publication announced Thursday. With three first-teamers, Carolina matches Oregon State for the most top selections nationally.
The ACC Pitcher of the Year, Bukauskas led the Tar Heels on Friday nights with a 9-1 record and a 2.53 ERA. A native of Ashburn, Virginia, Bukauskas struck out 116 batters in 92.2 innings of work, capping his career with the fifth-most strikeouts in program history at 294.
Hiatt had one of the best relief seasons in UNC history as a redshirt freshman. The Charlotte product was 4-2 with a 1.90 ERA and 13 saves in a team-high 32 appearances. His 13 saves rank as the fifth-most in a single season at Carolina. In ACC play Hiatt was virtually unhittable, finishing 3-0 with an 0.29 ERA and seven saves in 30.2 innings of work.
Warmoth emerged as one of the best college hitters in America as a junior. The shortstop from Orlando led the Tar Heels with 34 extra-base hits - 19 doubles, five triples and 10 homers - and slashed .336/.404/.554. Warmoth also played outstanding infield defense, finishing the year with just seven errors for a .970 fielding percentage. As a team, Carolina's fielding percentage of .979 was the second-best ever at UNC.
