U.S. Earns World Cup Spot With Win Over Japan

Victory is the 250th cap for a former Tar Heel
The U.S. Women's National Team beat Japan 1-0 Tuesday at the FIH Hockey World League Semifinals to assure itself a spot in the fields for both the FIH Hockey World League Final later this year and in the 2018 Hockey World Cup.

The victory gave the U.S. a 3-2 record at the event in Johannesburg, South Africa, and marked the milestone 250th cap for former Tar Heel Katelyn (Falgowski) Ginolfi. A three-time Olympian, she has been a member of the squad since 2003, when she was still in high school.

Ginolfi is one of seven current or former UNC players on the U.S. roster. Joining her are goalkeeper Jackie Briggs, Ashley Hoffman, Lauren Moyer, Â Loren Shealy, Caitlin Van Sickle and Julia Young. Hoffman is a rising junior at Carolina while the others are UNC graduates.

The World League Final is set for Auckland, New Zealand, later this year. The World Cup will be played in London in the summer of 2018.
