Dorian Bailey scores for the Tar Heels.
ORLANDO, FLA. – Christine Creighton scored in the 105th minute to lift UCF to a 2-1 victory over fourth-ranked North Carolina in women's soccer action Friday night at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.
UCF improved to 2-1 on the season while the Tar Heels fell to 1-1, playing their second overtime contest in two games this season. It was the 22nd meeting in history between the two teams but it resulted in the first ever victory for the Knights who are now 1-17-4 against Carolina.
The game featured a coaching matchup between 39-year Tar Heel head mentor Anson Dorrance and his former player, Tiffany Roberts-Sahaydak, an All-America midfielder at Carolina who graduated in 1999. Roberts played for the Tar Heels from 1995-98.
Carolina struck early in the game, scoring at 2:24 as junior Dorian Bailey scored from 22 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal. Senior Joanna Boyles assisted on the goal, her second assist of the season. The goal was Bailey's first of the campaign.
UNC maintained the lead for only 10 minutes, however, as UCF scored at 12:58 of the match. Zandy Soree's effort was blocked in the box but the ball fell right to Dina Orschmann who was all alone 12 yards out. She powered the ball into the back of the goal for a 1-1 tie.
Neither team scratched again until the second overtime. UNC outshot the Knights 8-3 in the second half and 3-0 in the first overtime period but the Tar Heels were unable to notch a game-winner despite having most of the possession. UCF scored the game-winner after a foul near midfield. Kayla Adamek tipped a ball in the box to Christine Creighton who scored the golden goal from about 10 yards out at 104:32.
UNC finished the game with a 15-10 edge in shots and both teams took three corner kicks. Samantha Leshnak played all 104:32 in goal for UNC and made two saves. UCF played two goalkeepers. Vera Varis made four saves and allowed one goal in 59:32 while Chloe N'Gazi made two saves and did not allow a goal in 45 minutes of action.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it plays at the University of South Florida at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The game will be webcast nationally on Facebook Live. The Bulls are 3-0 after beating Alabama 2-1 in overtime Thursday night in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
