Carolina Wins 6-1 At Appalachian State
September 10, 2017 | Field Hockey
BOONE, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team earned a 6-1 win at Appalachian State Sunday afternoon, with four different Tar Heel players scoring and a total of 21 seeing playing time. No. 4 UNC improved to 4-2 with the win, which followed a 3-1 loss at Wake Forest on Friday.
"We're trying to build off of Friday night," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We identified some issues and we're trying to work on some things. We're still looking to find ourselves and establish our identity and be able to execute consistently."
On Sunday, the Tar Heels took the lead for good early, scoring in the eighth minute on a penalty corner. Junior Ashley Hoffman had the goal, assisted by junior Eva van't Hoog. In the 24th minute, freshman Meredith Sholder added to the total to give UNC a 2-0 lead at halftime. Sophomore Megan DuVernois assisted on Sholder's goal.
Senior Gab Major made it 3-0 just 51 seconds into the second half. She then assisted on the next goal, by Hoffman on a penalty corner. Van't Hoog had the stick stop as the Tar Heels extended the lead to 4-0.
In the 51st minute, redshirt freshman Kathryn Holland scored her first goal as a Tar Heel, assisted by Major. The sixth goal came from sophomore Catherine Hayden in the 59th minute.
"It's always nice when you have diversity in your scoring," Shelton said. "And I'm pleased we got to play a lot of people."
The Mountaineers' Taylor Cimbalist scored with just under three minutes to play to get ASU on the scoreboard and deny UNC its third shutout of the season.
For the game, UNC led 26-6 in shots and 10-2 in penalty corners. Carolina goalkeepers Amanda Hendry and Alex Halpin each played a half in the win.
The match-up with ASU has extra meaning for UNC, with a Tar Heel in charge on the other bench. Meghan Dawson, who played at Carolina from 2007-11, is in her third season as the Mountaineers' coach.
"I'm happy to see the progress Appalachian State is making in its program," Shelton said. "They come out with a ton of energy and at times outworked us. I know Meghan is going to continue to do great things there."
After playing their first six games of the season on the road, the Tar Heels now return home for three games in a four-day span. This year, with a new stadium under construction, "home" is Duke's Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C. UNC will host Boston College there on Saturday, James Madison next Sunday (Sept. 17) and Davidson the following Tuesday (Sept. 19).
