January 18, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Orlando City SC announced Thursday that it acquired the Homegrown rights and signed for Tar Heel midfielder Cam Lindley from the Chicago Fire in exchange for defender Rafael Ramos and $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). City signs Lindley to a four-year contract with Club options.
Lindley is the 48th Tar Heel to join a MLS team either by the draft or via homegrown signing since 2000, and the 27th Tar Heel to do so since 2009. The Tar Heels have had at least two players sign with MLS clubs every year since 2010. Lindley joins senior Zach Wright who signed with Sporting KC on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Lindley, 20, is coming off a standout sophomore season at UNC as he was named First Team All-ACC, ACC Midfielder of the Year and First Team All-American by United Soccer Coaches. Lindley scored seven goals and recorded 13 assists in 22 appearances, giving him the most assists in one season by one player under Head Coach Carolos Somoano. The skilled midfielder also helped lead the Tar Heels to back-to-back NCAA Men's College Cups in his two season in Chapel Hill, the first back-to-back appearances since the team went four straight years from 2008-2011.
Lindley burst onto the college scene as a freshman in 2016, starting all 21 games and tallying seven assists. Lindley earned NSCAA Second Team All-America honors and was named ACC and TopDrawerSoccer National Freshman of the Year.
Prior to attending UNC, Lindley won a national championship with the Chicago Fire U-18 Academy team. Lindley also played for Chicago FC United and the Wilmington Hammerheads in the Professional Development League in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
