Carolina Falls To Virginia In Dual Meet Action

Duncan sweeps men's diving events.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.  – The #8 Virginia women's team and #23 Cavaliers' men's team swept the North Carolina Tar Heels in dual meet swimming and diving competition Saturday afternoon at the University of Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The Virginia women defeated the 21st-ranked Tar Heels 196-104 to improve 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in the ACC. The UNC women fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers triumphed in the men's meet 192.5-101.5. The Virginia men improved to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC while the Carolina men are now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

CAROLINA'S TOP PERFOMERS: The Tar Heels won four events in the men's meet. Freshman Greg Duncan swept the diving events. Fellow freshman Valdas Abaliksta took home first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.59. Senior J.T. Casey won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.51.

UNC's women also won four events. Individually, junior Maria Lohman won the one-meter diving competition while freshman Caroline Hauder took the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.97. Senior Caroline Baldwin captured first in the 100-yard freestyle (48.77). The Tar Heels finished the meet on a high note, taking the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:21.65. The winning relay included Caroline Baldwin, Emma Cole, Maddie Smith and Brooke Bauer.

UP NEXT: The Tar Heels finish their 2017-18 dual meet season next weekend. UNC plays host to NC State Friday at 5 p.m. at Koury Natatorium on Senior Day. The meet will be nationally televised on ACC Network Extra. On Saturday, the Tar Heels will swim at Duke at 1 p.m. in their final dual meet of the campaign.
