UNC Sweeps Tribe And Spiders In Season Openers

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia - Sophomore Alexa Graham won the clinching point to help lift No. 5 North Carolina to a 7-0 season-opening victory over William & Mary on Saturday morning from the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. UNC later defeated Richmond, 7-0, in the afternoon to make it a clean sweep for the Tar Heels.
In the morning match, the doubles point went quickly to the Tar Heels with victories on courts one and three. No. 18 Jessie Aney and Graham won 6-1 on court one and Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones earned an identical 6-1 victory to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors from Chapel Hill.
No. 38 Sara Daavettila didn't surrender a point in winning on court three in singles. No. 18 Aney won 6-3, 6-3 on court four and Graham secured the win with a 6-2, 6-2 result on court five.
No. 9 Alle Sanford won 6-2, 6-2 on court one, and the sweep was complete with No. 11 Makenna Jones and No. 124 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer winning in three sets on courts two and six, respectively.
In the afternoon versus the Spiders, Carolina won the doubles point with victories coming on all three courts, including seniors Maggie Kane and Cassandra Vazquez earning a win on court three. Singles was also clean for the Tar Heels. Sanford, Jones, Daavettila, Graham and Ouellet-Pizer each picked up their second win of the day in straight sets, and Marika Akkerman was inserted into line six and won 6-0, 6-1.
Next week will be busy one at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. UNC hosts East Carolina and Davidson on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
On the weekend, both the Carolina's men's and women's programs will host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The women welcome William & Mary, Illinois and Winthrop to town.
Carolina faces Winthrop on Friday at 1:30 p.m., while the Tribe and Fighting Illini square off at 11 a.m. On Saturday, UNC will play at 3:30 p.m. and the other match is slated for 6 p.m.
