No. 1 UNC Outshoots NC State 18-2, But Falls 1-0
October 12, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Raleigh, N.C. – No. 1 North Carolina outshot NC State 18-2, but fell to the Wolfpack 1-0 in front of a standing room only crown in Raleigh on Friday night. The Heels only conceded one shot on goal on goal all night, but it was the lone difference in the match.
In the 11th minute the Heels had the first real chance on goal for either side. Nils Bruening picked off an errant pass in the midfield and lofted the ball to the back post for Milo Garvanian, but the volley off the left foot of the freshman went right to NC State's Leon Krapf in goal.
Both sides were about even over the course of the next 30 minutes, but the Heels turned on the pressure over the last five minutes of the first half, almost scoring the then go-ahead goal multiple times. The Tar Heels registered four shots in the last five minutes with a header by Bruening and a curler from Jelani Pieters almost finding the back of the net.
The Heels and the Wolfpack went in to halftime 0-0 with North Carolina leading 8-1 in total shots without conceding a shot on goal to NC State.
Both teams came out aggressive in the second half, but it was NC State who took the 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. David Loera took the ball from midfield and dribbled at the Tar Heel back line to begin the attack. Two Tar Heel defenders looked to disrupt the run, but a bad bounce off of Loera's legs put the ball right behind the defense and he tucked it in the back of the net.
The goal seemed to wake up the Carolina offense as the Heels put the pressure on the Wolfpack shortly after going behind. Between the 62nd and 64th minute the Heels put together three corners and three shots on goal, but they couldn't find the equalizer.
In the 69th minute, Bruening looked like he found the back of the net, but his shot clanked off the crossbar after a beautiful cross from Pieters to the back post.
Perhaps the best chance for the Heels to equalize came in the 88th minute when Gio Montesdeoca found the ball at his feet six yards out, but hit the volley high as it sailed over the crossbar as the Heels couldn't find an equalizer and dropped their second game of the season.
Over the course of the game, the Heels had a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal and 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Heels will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, as they host Winthrop in Cary at 7 p.m. ET.
