No. 1 Tar Heels Host Winthrop Tuesday In Last Nonconference Match

UNC Hosts Winthrop In Midweek Match
• After a tough week where the Heels went 0-1-1 they will look to get back on track Tuesday night against Winthrop.
• All-time the Heels are 7-1 against Winthrop with the lone loss coming in the first meeting back in 1984 in a 4-3 defeat.
• Over the last 3 meetings, the Heels are 3-0 and have outscored Winthrop 19-0.
UNC Draws ODU, Lose to State in Tough Week
• North Carolina earned its first draw of the season after the 1-1 result in Norfolk on Sept. 10
• With the tie against ODU, the Heels have now gone 12 consecutive games in extra time without a loss.Â
• The 1-1 draw against ODU broke a 23-game streak for the Tar Heels. Over the last two seasons, Carolina has won every game in which they have scored first.
• UNC lost its second game of the season in a 1-0 defeat at NC State. The Heels outshot the Wolfpack 18-2, but failed to put one in the back of the net.Â
• The 18 shots against NC State were the most by the Heels in a single game this season.
Two Losses, But Dominant Numbers
• UNC has lost two 1-0 games this season, against Indiana and NC State. In those gamses, the Heels have outshot their opponents 29-5 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal.Â
• In both games, the Heels have a 16-7 advantage in corners as well.Â
Scoring = Undefeated
• So far this year, the Heels are undefeated when they score at least one goal. They have a 1-1 draw against Old Dominion & the only two defeats came in a 1-0 shutout to Indiana & NC State when the Heels outshot the Hoosiers 11-3 and the Wolfpack 18-2.
Suffocating Defense
• The Tar Heels have one of the best defenses in the country this season. Nationally, UNC is third in goals against average at 0.476 goals allowed per game.
• In ACC play, the Tar Heels lead the ACC in goals against average (0.56) having only conceded three goals in 485 minutes during ACC play. They are also first in overall goals allowed in conference play with 3.
• In seven of its last 11 games, the Tar Heel defense has not allowed their opponents to register more than four total shots or more than three shots on goal.
• Against No. 2 Indiana, the Tar Heels held the Hoosiers to 3 total shots, the least amount in any game for Indiana in 2004, with only two being on goal.
• Carolina followed up that performance by only allowing three shots with one on goal against William & Mary in the third game of the season.
• Against Jacksonville, Carolina held the Dolphins to 2 total shots and no shots on goal.
• The Tar Heels held Davidson to only 4 total shots with 3 of them being on goal.
• The most impressive performance might be against No. 8 Notre Dame when the Heels only allowed 3 total shots, with no shots on goal in 105 minutes.
• UNC held Clemson to 4 total shots and only one on goal for its third consecutive shutout.
• In the 1-0 loss against NC State the Heels outshot the Wolfpack 18-2 and only allowed one shot on goal.
• The Tar Heels have kept clean sheets for 6 of 12 games. At one point the Tar Heels held a four and a half game scoreless streak that lasted 517 minutes.
• The Tar Heels have only allowed two first half goals this season.

• UNC is the least penalized team in the country only conceded 7.92 fouls per game, which is the lowest in the nation.
