Heels Score Two Late Goals To Take Down Boston College, 2-0
October 19, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Newton, Mass. – No. 5 North Carolina scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to seal the 2-0 win over Boston College on Friday night to remain on top of the Coastal Division standings. Nils Bruening and Jack Skahan scored four minutes apart while the Tar Heel defense recorded their eighth shutout of the season to secure the sides fifth ACC win of the year.
Both sides were quiet in the first half as neither registered a shot on goal. The Heels registered the first two shots of the game, but Boston College ended the first half outshooting Carolina 5-3. The best chance for either side came in the 31st minute when Jelani Pieters fired a shot that clanked off the post.
Things certainly picked up in the second half for both sides. The Heels looked like they were about to break through in the 70th minute with back-to-back shots from Jeremy Kelly and Mauricio Pineda, but both were blocked by Eagles defenders.
After a flurry of substitutions from both sides, the Heels finally broke through in the 81st minute thanks to a Bruening header off a cross from Skahan. The goal was Bruening's sixth of the year, tying him for first on the team with Gio Montesdeoca.
Just four minutes later Skahan slotted home a goal of his own to give the Heels a 2-0 lead with five minutes left to play. Montesdeoca got the play started for the Heels and Skahan finished it to cap off a massive week for the junior forward. The goal was his fourth of the week after securing a hat-trick against Winthrop on Tuesday.
The Heels have a big final week of the regular season coming up as they take on rival Duke on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before closing by hosting Virginia at home Friday night. The Tar Heels currently sit in first place in the Coastal Division with Duke and Virginia second and third, respectively.
