Tar Heels Sweep ITA Regional Titles

CHAPEL HILL - Sara Daavetilla won the singles title, while Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra took home the doubles championship to represent the North Carolina women's tennis team at the ITA Carolinas Regional on Monday afternoon on its home court at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Fifth seed and 27th ranked Daavettila won the singles title in straight sets over No. 20 Ingrid Gamarra Martins of South Carolina, 6-4, 6-2. The Williamston, Michigan, native won five of her six matches in straight sets to earn the regional title for the second time in the last three seasons. In 2016, top-seed Daavettila defeated teammate Jessie Aney in the finals, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Morra and Jones faced South Carolina's Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrbacher on court three Monday afternoon. Playing together competitively for the first time, the Tar Heel duo outlasted their opponent to the tune of a, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (8), victory to make it a sweep over the Gamecocks.Â
Carolina has dominated the regionals in recent years with the likes of Hayley Carter winning the singles title in 2015 and Caroline Price doing the same in 2014.
In doubles, Aney and Alexa Graham won the doubles title in 2017, Aney and Kate Vialle won it in 2015, Ashley Dai and Vialle won it in 2014 and Hayley Carter and Jamie Loeb were victorious as freshman back in 2013.
On Sunday, Carolina senior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer won the consolation singles title over Alexis Franco of Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-4.
UNC will host the Kitty Harrison Invitational Nov. 2-4 in Chapel Hill.Â
