No. 1 Tar Heels Draw Old Dominion, 1-1
October 9, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Norfolk, Va. – The No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels (9-1-1) and the Old Dominion Monarchs (7-3-2) tied 1-1 Tuesday night on a muggy afternoon in Norfolk. Mauricio Pineda scored the lone goal for the Heels in the 42nd minute for his fourth goal of the season. With the tie, the Heels are now unbeaten in their last 12 overtime games.
Old Dominion came out the aggressor Tuesday night with two quick shots on goal within the first five minutes, but James Pyle made two big saves to keep the game score deadlocked early.
After that, both sides settled in to a midfield battle as neither side registered another shot on goal until Pineda scored the game's opening goal in the 42nd minute to put the Heels up, 1-0. Gio Montesdeoca found himself with the ball at the top of the box and played a through ball to a streaking Jelani Pieters who one-touched the ball back to Pineda who slid it in the open net for his fourth goal of the season.
Both sides finished the half with three shots as the Heels scored on the only shot on goal.
Just like the majority of the first half, both sides struggled to find their offense early in the second half, but Old Dominion was able to scrap its way to a game-tying goal in the 64th minute. Off a corner, Pyle came out and punched the ball clear but it was put back in the box by ODU. After the ball bounced around the box several times, James Ellis got to it first and put the ball in the back of the net over several Tar Heel defenders to tie the game.
Although the Heels outs shot the Monarchs 6-2 in the second half, neither side could break the deadlock before 90 minutes so for the third time this season the Tar Heels went in to extra time. Unlike the other two times this saeson, the Heels couldn't find the game-winner as they ended the night with their first tie of the season.
Carolina will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 12 against NC State in Raleigh.
