Carolina Boats Earn Five Top-10 Finishes At Head of the Hooch
November 3, 2018 | Women's Rowing
Five North Carolina boats earned top-10 finishes Saturday as the Tar Heel rowing team competed at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. UNC raced in five 8+s and four 4+s over a 5,000-meter course on the Tennessee River as part of one of the world's largest regattas.
Â
In the Championship 8+ race, UNC boats were fifth (V8 in 15:21.402), seventh (2V8 in 15:36.900) and 15th (3V8 in 16:10.383).
Â
In the College & Club Novice 8+, UNC took fourth (N8 16:25.016) and ninth (2N8 17:13.450)
Â
In the Championship 4+, UNC was fourth (A 16:37.721), 11th (B 17:09.244), 13th (C 17:15.266) and 16th (D 17:37.163).
Â
"I was really proud of how our team performed today," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We were able to take the experience from last weekend and make our races better today. We had a solid performance across the board with five top-10 finishes.
Â
"The conditions were great – not much wind, but a strong tail current. Rowing with a strong current is different than on a lake and I also thought we made positive changes to adapt to the current."
The Tar Heels added another outstanding finish on Sunday, when Abby Hudspeth raced in the Championship 1x. She finished seventh overall in her first time racing in a single. Due to fog and incoming wind, tthe course was shortened to 2100m.Â
Next up for the Tar Heels is the final race of the fall, the Rivanna Romp on Nov. 11 in Charlottesville, Va.
