No. 12 Tar Heels Fall To No. 11 Nebraska, 22-15
December 16, 2018 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL -- Chip Ness, A.C. Headlee and Austin O'Connor all picked up wins, but strong late performances from No. 11 Nebraska helped the Huskers to a 22-15 win over No. 12 North Carolina Saturday at Carmichael Arena.
The Tar Heels (3-1) began the day's action with six quick points, as Nebraska forfeited the opening match at 125 pounds to Joe Heilmann.Â
After Nebraska (5-1) won at 133, Headlee put in one of the performances of the night, defeating Chad Red Jr. in a 5-1 decision. Going into the final period with a 1-0 lead, Headlee took the top position and was able to put Red on his back and collect a four-point near fall. Headlee held the lead throughout the rest of the two minutes to give the Tar Heels a 9-3 advantage.
O'Connor followed Headlee's match with a standout performance of his own. The sixth-ranked redshirt freshman was dominant from the start against Collin Purinton, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. He was able to utilize three takedowns in the third period to cruise to a 12-3 major decision, helping Carolina jump out to a 13-3 lead.
Nebraska was able to rattle off wins in the next two matches, including a wild bout at 165. Kennedy Monday had the riding time point locked up with 10 seconds to go in the match, but No. 6 Isaiah White was able to get to his legs and take Monday down to the mat as time expired. The call was reviewed, but the takedown called on the mat stood and gave White a dramatic 5-4 lead to cut North Carolina's lead to 13-10.Â
In the 174-pound match between Devin Kane and No. 9 Mikey Labriola, Nebraska picked up six points on an injury default. Going down to the mat, Kane landed awkwardly on his shoulder and wasn't able to continue the match. That gave Nebraska a 16-13 lead heading into 184 pounds.
No. 13 Chip Ness took the mat against No. 3 Taylor Venz and in the duo's third matchup since the start of the 2017-18 season, Ness came out victorious. With takedowns in the first and second period, Ness entered the third with a 5-4 lead. Venz gave a tough ride to nullify riding time to start the period, but Ness' escape proved to be the difference in a 6-5 win that cut the Husker lead to 16-15 due to a team penalty point.Â
Nebraska took the last two matches of the night — Eric Schultz over Chasen Blair (16-10) at 197 and David Jensen over Cory Daniel (7-2) at heavyweight to send the Huskers home winners, 22-15.
The Tar Heels will take a break for the holidays before returning to action at the South Beach Duals on December 29.
