CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina has hired Will Clayton as an assistant men's soccer coach, announced by head coach Carlos Somoano on Thursday.
A native of Durham, N.C., Clayton most recently served as an assistant coach with the UCF men's soccer program from 2014-2017. Clayton served as the Knights recruiting coordinator and had on-field responsibilities along with assisting in the day-to-day operations of the programs.
"Being from the area, I know how special this athletic department and men's soccer program are," said Clayton. "It is an honor to join coach Somoano's staff and I am excited to hit the ground running."
As a former NCAA Division I National Champion in 2007 at Wake Forest, Clayton helped the Demon Deacons make three-consecutive appearances at the NCAA College Cup from 2006-08.
"Will is a character guy who brings a team first winning mentality," said head coach Carlos Somoano. "Most importantly he cares about student-athlete development and is in line with the mission of Carolina athletics. I have no doubt he will be a positive influence on our community and look forward to working with him"
After spending three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Clayton aided UMass-Lowell in its transition to Division I (America East Conference) as the top assistant in 2013. He was involved in all aspects of the program with an emphasis on recruiting. Helped put together the Riverhawks' recruiting class that went on to help UMass Lowell finish No. 4 in the RPI two years ago.
As a player for the Demon Deacons, Clayton was a part of the 2006 and 2008 ACC Regular Season Championship squads. The 2007 National Champion graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in history.
