Carolina Competes At Cooper Sprints
March 25, 2018 | Women's Rowing
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The North Carolina rowing team handled stiff competition and challenging conditions well Sunday in the second of back-to-back days of racing. At the Cooper Sprints, hosted by Bucknell on the Cooper River, the Tar Heel 3V8 took first place, the 2V4 came in second, the 2V8 was third, the V8 was fourth and the V4 was fifth.
"It was another good day for Carolina rowing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "This weekend was another step up on our level of competition and we handled it well."
Carolina raced Saturday in Philadelphia against Temple and Saint Joseph's then made a quick turnaround to begin Cooper Sprints heats at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. First up was the third varsity eight, which took first in its heat in a time of 7:55.08. Against the same field in the finals, the 3V8 again placed first, this time in 7:59.90. The lineup for that boat was Ashley Lim (coxswain), Julianne Peters, Kate Hickert, Katie McMahon, Maddie Omeltchenko, Muskan Chhina, Liz Finnessy, Sarah Velarde and Lily Brown.
The second varsity four placed third in its heat then took second in the final in a time of 8:52.15. The 2V4 lineup was Adelaide Cooke (coxswain), Madelyn Krebs, Mackenzie Drake, Maureen Whittelsey and Sophia Rogers.
The varsity four finished second in its heat, with the top four times in the two heats advancing to the grand final and the rest to the petite final. The Tar Heels had the fifth-fastest time (8:33.85) so raced in the petite final, which UNC won in 8:47.81. The lineup was Sofia Triana (coxswain), Melanie Hussey, Morgan Donnelly, Jackie Kenny and Lindsay Miller.
The second varsity eight placed second in its heat and had the fourth-fastest time (7:38.70) to reach the grand final. The Tar Heels were third in the final, behind Navy and Rhode Island in 8:02.43.
The varsity eight placed second in its heat with the fourth-best time to earn a spot in the grand final. The Tar Heels were fourth overall in 7:45.61, behind Navy, Rhode Island and UMass.
"We handled this weekend incredibly well," Haney said. "I knew going in that this was where we needed to be and who we needed to race because it would provide competition that would extend our reach and give us a clear idea of where we stand. We are proud of the work our team has put forth so far this season and then we are seeing the changes on the race course as well.
"It was pretty cold and windy this weekend, but especially today. Our team handled the conditions well and did not let the cold negatively effect what they wanted to accomplish."
